The area of the Ancient Cities includes four UNESCO World Heritage Site listed places, namely the fascinating Cave temples of Dambulla, stunning Sigiriya, (-also known as ‘the palace in the clouds’), and the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonaruwa. In addition to these famous sites, the area is also home to lesser known historical places such as Giritale, Mihintale and Yapahuwa.
Apart from the many historical places, the area is also fantastic for its wildlife watching opportunities. Several national parks offer great chances to spot elephants and a variety of birds, and to embark on a Jeep Safari in one of the parks is a highlight of any trip to the area.
